Our recent updates
Thursday, 2 October 2008
As you already may have noticed, thn.gs has a new look and name. Let’s talk about the reasons behind it.
First of all, thn.gs is a web application, not the desktop one. Originally our project was inspired by the beautiful Mac OS X application Things by Cultured Code. We wanted to cooperate with them, but it’s not our fault we didn’t. That made us move away from original concept of replicating the look of a desktop application, thn.gs now has it’s own bright future and development plans.
Of course, the new look might be shoking (and some of you already wrote us about it), but it is really the only way it can be.
Do you like the new design? We’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Not from the point of comparing it with the old one, but from the point of usability and actual aesthetical pleasure. You might miss the glamourous shadows, but they aren’t making the design great.

For me now it become much cooler! Now I see clean, logical interface. The old one was quite good too though, but the new one is great too. Surprised when noticed scrolling; the whole app became more web-stylish, previous Mac OS X-like interface distracted a bit.

First of all, I’m a Mac interface lover, so maybe I’m not objective, nevertheless I have to say I don’t like this new apperance. It’s not only a question of compare it with the old one, It’s about interface designing. “Appleish” interfaces work because they’re designed thinking on users, not in the programmer. There are many ways to improve your design without copying Things Desktop App: you don’t have to simplify your design only because it’s easier. An interface must be enought beautiful to make users enjoy with their use. I’m not talking about flashing animations or impresive effects, I’m talking about elegance and some eye-candy. There are many web designs you can inspire in: http://blog.cocoia.com/ , http://kuler.adobe.com/index.cfm# , http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/, http://macrabbit.com/ http://www.panic.com/coda/ …
You don’t have to steal any design but you can inspire on them.

New design is quite nice. The main thing is that thn.gs becomes working much more quicker. But I can say that scheduled tasks are still needed a lot.
Otherwise, the service is very cool, thank you very much!

Hello, now i saw thn.gs before the update and I must admit I prefer the apple looks.
What is intriguing to me, how you managed technicaly to achieve this level of responsiveness keeping the code at such a small size. which frameworks are you using? jquery, mootools, dojo? if it is not a secret Id love to know!!
Great work Cheers, Pete

New design colors are a bit “tired” and monochrome. I’d suggest adding some “active” or “fresh” colors. People shouldn’t look at their todo list with boredom
The service is great! And innovative! So why not indicate this?
I’m having trouble with my account by the way. All my tickets are gone. Will they come back any time soon?
Do you have any bug tracker? I would like to send out a couple of bug reports/issues I’ve encountered so far.
Thanks for the service.

Omg! Is it my eyes or you implemented some sort of horizontal slightly changing gradient all over the ticket items? If you DID then it is a great zebra-style eye killer, but it is impossible to work this way, sorry. Got myself a headache so far

Oh, I got it. You wanted to make some sort of zig-zag effect. Well, you should have at least made the colors more distinctive. Our eyes subconsciously try to define the edges and borders. This is the same as trying to read a newspaper without the propper ligthting. Not a good idea for you eyes health. Besides – to-do ticket list is a structured list, and its structure is being distorted by the perspectives, which as well gives trouble reading the list and finding propper tags on the right side of every ticket. I like experimenting too, but this is really bad idea.

I just signed up and was blown away at how clean the interface is. I mean, it seems so… empty! I kept looking around to see if maybe I was missing a button or something to bring out a bunch of fancy flashy clutter thingy-ma-bobs but soon got bored searching and just started adding tasks. Interesting site and I hope to commit myself to actually use it!
Suggestion to maybe have the future ability to change the color of individual tasks for say, priority or noticeability reasons?

Wow. The interface is so clean. Well done. However, I miss is a little help feature, e.g. how to best organize your “things”, how to use the inbox etc.

Just found this site and like its clean interface. Good job on this. Before starting this tool for managing my next actions, I am wondering about lifespan of this product (specially as there is no way to export my todo). I have seen many Web 2.0 TODO sites come into this world and gone next month with all of my data and effort.

@SamPet, thank you for your kind words. We can’t even imagine a reason that would push us to close the service. The worst thing that might happen to it is stagnation, but we are working hard on the new functionality, and export/import is on our to-do list. You can you be sure that Somethings won’t close next month, and all of your data is safe and secure.
P.S. Sorry for the long time it took us to answer.

Maybe you should try adding skin support or something, i dont really like the color scheme right now, one that works great is Track. The one that is right now provokes me a headache and makes me feel depressed, i do not enjoy using it at all.
Though the speed is great, i liked mac os x interface better, but this one is faster =)

Unfortunately, there won’t be different skins. But we are working at the new great design now. It is unreasonable for such application to spend a lot of resources to develop skin support. Somethings isn’t entertaining application so there is no need in skins.`

Looking at the pace of adding features, IMO it’s feasible idea to open source it and let other developer contribute to this fantastic tool as well (of course if you don’t have any monetizing strategy in future.)

The design is ok though I have not seen old one. I’m glad you made something so similar yet so different to Things. The google gears feature is a killer!

I’m using Thn.gs but after I have checked actions as done, they still sit where they sat. Is there any way I can force Somethings to log the actions to the logbook?

We know about such problem, and this bug will be fixed soon. We are sorry for such inconvenience. Now you can only drop it manually to the logbook.

Is there a view that shows “all” upcoming to-do items, regardless of where they’re placed (projects, inbox, etc.)?
Thanks!

I love how you’ve changed all the colors, but it’s still a complete ripoff of Things. I guess it’s not so easy to come up with your own ideas, huh?

I love this tool, it needs more features but is really useful. But regardingto the interface I am agree with the people that prefer a more Mac like look&feel. You don’t need to copy Things interface, but the clean and elegant mac look is really good for usability. The current design for me is toooo clena and a little bit boring, too simpler for me. If you can make your own interface inspired in Mac applications would be really nice. Anyway thanks for the tool it rocks!

Very nice job, guys! I really like that clear interface and I hope, there will not too many features be implemented in the near future. Some short ideas anyway: 1. Show the “notes” content onMouseover 2. 2 or 3 basic formattings for the notes like bold -stroke- underlined 3. an additional urgent! checkbox field per note element, maybe.
So far, thanks –n

The new look changes the skin but the structure still looks to be a 1:1 copy of Things by Cultured Code. It feels to me like you should focus on innovating around the underlying concept and worry less about GUI trivialities.

There’s a problem with Somethings, Fluid (fluidapp.com) and Google Gears on Snow leopard. Can you solve it?

I’m using Somethings for over two months now. In most cases it does its job great. But I would like to propose an improvement for items with due date. It would be awesome if they were highlighted with color on the last day so that they easily grab my attention. Having them highlighted after due date is good, but making them visually pop up on due date would be great.
P.S. I’m posting here because didn’t see a better place for feedback. Did I miss a link for feedback page or email?
